This week Minute to Minute introduces you to a mom
who needs some encouragement from veteran homeschoolers.
She's about to plunge into homeschooling for the first time
but needs help overcoming the fear factor.
She, like Joshua, needs to be reminded of the Lord's
command in Joshua 1:9, "Have not I commanded thee? Be strong
and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou
dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou
goest." The Lord has commanded his people, and especially
homeschool moms, to not fear. He is with us, guiding our
steps. An unfearful spirit is not a suggestion, it's a
command. "Be not afraid. . . for the Lord thy God is with
thee." | |

Dear Homeschool Moms,
I am a stay at home mom to
my two children (a son, 6 and daughter, 7) and a wife to a
very loving and supportive husband. I first started thinking
about homeshooling when my daughter was a baby, and I was
reading the Pearl's, No Greater Joy, child training
series.
Both kids went to preschool a few days a week
(one year at a Christian preschool). My daughter
finished kindergarten and first grade at our local public
school and my son just completed kindergarten there. As
public schools go, it's one of the better ones in our town.
Several of the teachers are born again believers and many of
the teachers are wonderful and dedicated. Both of my
children (and I) have made some nice friends there, yet in the
middle of the year we decided that we'd homeschool next year.
The straw that broke the camel's back could have been my son's
comment that he missed having his teacher talk about Jesus,
but it's probably more of our general frustration over the
negative socialization and wasted time at school.
My
husband is 100% behind homeschooling, but my family will be
furious when they find out, and most of my friends don't think
it's a good idea.
I have been excited (most of the
time) at the idea of homeschooling, and I've done tons of
research into what we'll be studying next year. During
the school year, the kids sometimes expressed a desire to stay
at home for school. When school got out, we told them
that they'd be homeschooled next year, yet I don't know if
they fully understand that they won't be going to the school
AT ALL next year. A big problem I face is that we live
one house away from the grade school! We hear every
bell/recess/PE class all day long even from inside the
house.
I believe that the Lord put this desire to
homeschool in my heart and mind, and I know that in Him there
is no fear... but I'm so scared! What if the kids beg to go
back when they see/hear their friends at recess or hear from
their friends about some fun activity they're doing at school?
What if I can't make learning exciting or fun for
them? What if I lose my will/desire to homeschool during
the year?.....I'm ready take the plunge, but I'm
so afraid I might lose my will in the face
of so many "what ifs."
Preparing to homeschool,
