Testimonials

I rarely reply to these emails but wanted to thank you so very much for this article (Servant or Slave, September 2007).  It is something I needed to hear and will be sharing with the family tonight at our Family Home Evening. I truly enjoy receiving these. Thank you again.

From the Editor ~ Far From Thankful
Deborah Wuehler

Ever felt that way? Hard things come our way and we lose focus. Hard people come our way and we lose courage. Hard times come our way and we lose faith. We are so far from thankful that we've gone to the other extreme of actually being ungrateful.

We have our celebrations and family feasts, but our hearts have forgotten true thankfulness, and we have become like the nine lepers who never returned to Jesus.

Those ten lepers looked for pity because, like us, they were diseased, alone, and ailing. And although they were completely healed, only one thought to return to the Healer.

I believe losing a thankful heart is just as crippling a disease as leprosy - it's a kind of leprosy of the soul. It causes men and women (even those who call themselves Christians) to go through the motions but forget to return to their Healer.

And, after looking at reasons for thanksgiving in the Scriptures, I have come to the conclusion that I am far from truly thankful also. Look at these:

The LORD liveth; and blessed be my rock; and exalted be the God of the rock of my salvation. It is God that avengeth me, and that bringeth down the people under me, And that bringeth me forth from mine enemies: thou also hast lifted me up on high above them that rose up against me: thou hast delivered me from the violent man. Therefore I will give thanks unto thee, O LORD, among the heathen, and I will sing praises unto thy name. 2 Samuel 22:47-50

The Lord is our Deliverer. This is not just about the food we eat and the clothes we wear - it is being thankful about Who the Lord is. How has He delivered you?

Give thanks unto the LORD, call upon his name, make known his deeds among the people. Sing unto him, sing psalms unto him, talk ye of all his wondrous works. Glory ye in his holy name: let the heart of them rejoice that seek the LORD. Seek the LORD and his strength, seek his face continually. Remember his marvellous works that he hath done, his wonders, and the judgments of his mouth 1 Chronicles 16:8-12

We are exhorted here to not only thank God for what He has done for us, but to declare to others His deeds - who better than to those of our own household?

It also said, "seek His face continually." Is seeking Him a continual habit in my home? For that matter, is thanksgiving a habit? Are we making the seeking of His face and the giving of thanks a priority and a custom in our homes daily? I fall short here, as well.

Here's another:

O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good; for his mercy endureth for ever. And say ye, Save us, O God of our salvation, and gather us together, and deliver us from the heathen, that we may give thanks to thy holy name, and glory in thy praise. Blessed be the LORD God of Israel for ever and ever. And all the people said, Amen, and praised the LORD. 1 Chronicles 16: 34-36

Do I think about giving thanks for His goodness and mercy? How about for His holiness as stated here:

Sing unto the LORD, O ye saints of his, and give thanks at the remembrance of his holiness. Psalm 30: 4

Or what about "triumphing in His praise"? I think I am far from that, too:

Save us, O LORD our God, and gather us from among the heathen, to give thanks unto thy holy name, and to triumph in thy praise. Blessed be the LORD God of Israel from everlasting to everlasting: and let all the people say, Amen. Praise ye the LORD. Psalm 106:47, 48

How often do we give God thanks and praise and affirmation? The angels in heaven around His throne continue day and night in praise of His Holiness. We should do no less. Morning, noon, and night, every day of every year of our short lives should be spent in thanksgiving and praise. I desire to be closer to that goal.

Let my mouth be filled with thy praise and with thy honour all the day.  Psalm 71:8

Seven times a day I praise you for your righteous laws. Psalm 119:164

At midnight I will rise to give thanks unto thee because of thy righteous judgments. Psalm 119: 62

Instead of being like that leper who never returns to the Healer, let's join those around the throne of God and worship Him for the beauty of His Holiness and enter His gates with thanksgiving and into His courts with praise.

And, the next time you run across folks who have something to complain about, whether it is their spouses or their children or their lot in life, or know some miserable creatures looking for pity (and they may even be at your own Thanksgiving table), remind them of the beauty of the Lord - maybe even print off all of these Scriptures and more (there are tons) and have each person read one or two and pick out the reasons in each that show why we can offer true thanks. Maybe even read that parable of the ten lepers!

I am encouraged to turn around and head straight back to Jesus and fall before Him in thanksgiving, bringing my children with me.

On My Way Back to True Thankfulness,

~Deborah

From Our Readers ~ Attitude
by Stacy R. Miller, Kokomo, IN

Attitudes can make us or break us. If you have been around someone with a bad attitude, you will notice that you feel like the life is slowly being drained from you. On the other hand, if you are surrounded with those who have a positive attitude, it is like a breath of fresh air. You will leave their presence feeling invigorated.

Because attitudes are so important, I came up with an acrostic for the word "attitude" to help us in adjusting our own attitudes.

A is for acknowledging God. (Proverbs 3:5-6)

T is for trusting God to help you. (Proverbs 3:5)

T is for training yourself to be godly. (1 Timothy 4:7)

I  is for interrupting ungodly thoughts. (2 Corinthians 10:5; Philippians 4:8)

T is for turning your thoughts heavenward. (Colossians 3:1-2)

U is for unloading your burdens before the Lord. (Psalm 55:22)

D is for daily reading and meditating on the Word. (Psalm 1:1-2; 119:97-98)

E is for extolling the Lord. (Psalm 34:1)

By acknowledging God, we can view any interruption or crisis with a sense of calm rather than panic. Acknowledging the Lord can make it much easier to trust Him, even when faced with things we do not understand.

Each day carries annoyances that have the ability to push our hot-buttons. The kids will bicker or have a meltdown over their schoolwork. The dryer may quit just as we pull a load of wet clothes out of the washer. The car battery may go bad just when we have loaded the trunk with groceries. Yet when we fully trust God to work ALL things together for good, we can train ourselves to respond in a godly fashion, rather than reacting from our fleshly hot-buttons.

When we have trained ourselves to be godly, we will find it is easier to interrupt ungodly thoughts. We will have toned up our spiritual muscles, making us ready to do a "workout" on any ungodly thoughts.

There is something about acknowledging God in those quiet hours, early in the morning.  When I take the time to do that, I find my thoughts are more apt to turn heavenward throughout the rest of my day. As I make a habit of turning my thoughts toward the Lord, it becomes a natural thing to unload my burdens to Him.

I have found that taking time to read the Word in the morning helps me to meditate on it as I set about my daily tasks. And the more I meditate on Him and His Word, the more I find myself extolling Him every day.

How about you? Do you need some help with your attitude? Do you need a new attitude?

In Christ, Stacy R. Miller

Lapbooking
Thanksgiving - Lapbook Style!
by Cyndi Kinney, R.N.

As the Holiday Season is upon us, most people find themselves very busy with various activities. At least for our family, Thanksgiving seems to literally "sneak up on us" every year. Why is this? For me, it's because I have been so busy with other things. Anyone else feeling like they are "too busy" for the holidays?

Since this is the Thanksgiving season, I know that I need to slow down. So, how can I slow down during what seems like the busiest time of the year, but still feel like I am accomplishing the important things?

I think that the best way to do this is to define "important things." Am I suggesting that we all throw the school books and budgets out the window during this time so that we can relax? No, not at all. Those things are important too, but the way we use them and the way we interact with them is more important.

Use this time to have some fun lessons that aren't found in textbooks or workbooks. Let your children help you with the family Thanksgiving meal (and the budget for it). Let them learn more about the holiday. Let them learn about turkeys! Let them study thankfulness and learn to show it more.

One way that you can spice up your holidays is to put the textbooks aside and play games! Of course, I am talking about educational games, like "file folder games." File Folder Games are lapbooks, but they are mini-versions with lots of fun activities that don't require planning on your part. You don't even have to create one of your own! I've created 2 file folder games, and I have packaged them together on our site, but YOU can download them for FREE!

Maybe it's time for some new family traditions to infuse you with the Thanksgiving spirit. How do you start new traditions, and why bother? Traditions create life-long memories that you pass down to your children. These traditions may be as simple as letters to relatives or cooking together. Whatever traditions you create, the key is to perform them as a family.

File folder games are a great way to include the whole family in the education experience! Try it! You might be surprised how much you learn yourself!

Schoolhouse Store Spotlight ~ E-Book: WisdomKids Copywork Program Thankfulness Set

WisdomKids Copywork ProgramE-book: WisdomKids Copywork Program Thankfulness Set

This two book set from the WisdomKids copywork program includes Thanks and Giving and The ABC's of Being Thankful.

At last, a Scripture learning program that teaches your children how Scripture applies to their lives NOW! Oftentimes, children can't tell you what verses mean in their personal walk; they merely recite them from memory. It's time our children not only have God's word stored in their minds, but also in their hearts! Using the copywork method, your child will learn, verse by verse, how Scripture relates to them NOW, not just when they "get big".

Each book includes Wisdom Stretchers, coloring pages, questions, puzzles, and challenge pages. All materials include worldview analogies. This two-book, special edition is available just in time for the Thanksgiving holiday. When you've completed the book, an award awaits you as you recognize the accomplishment in your child's life; living God's word.
