Nancy CarterMemorial Day is coming up on Monday for those of us in the US. And while for some people it is just another 4 day weekend, now that I have personally lost a friend in the war, it is so much more.

Today's edition of THM honors all of our military and their families. Losing a friend really emphasized the fact that freedom isn't free. Our men and women in the service not only give of themselves, but their families do as well - dealing with the moves, the separations, the fear.

Looking for information on military homeschooling? You can click
here to subscribe to our military newsletter or read the current issues or archives by clicking on the side tab. You can also get to know other homeschooling military families and keep up with news by visiting the Military Home Front blog. Still looking for more? Purchase the Winter issue of TOS which highlighted military homeschooling.

You all may be spread out all over the world, but you're definitely not alone. God is always with you and our thoughts and prayers are with you as well. Hug your family and tell them that the folks from TOS said "Thank you."

Enjoy every minute!

Gena's still soaking up the Florida sunshine this week, but she'll be back soon. In the meantime, I'm grateful to join Todd Wilson, the Familyman, as a second voice of the men supporting homeschooling.

A lot of us are looking forward to Memorial Day weekend. It's easy for the activities to crowd out the real reason for the holiday: remembering and honoring the members of our military who have served our nation in war and in peace. Many soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines are with us everyday, and we don't realize it. They have taken their experience from the military and used it to build America's economy by working in private businesses.

I have great respect for our military men and women. Without Tia Linschied and many others who have worked in all kinds of posts, in all kinds of conditions, our homes and families would not have the security that they enjoy today. In between the activities and leisure time this holiday weekend, take time to ask your friends if they served in the military, and if they did, thank them for their service. We owe them a debt we can never truly repay.

Proudly American,

Did you know Memorial Day was originally called Decoration Day to honor the nation's Civil War dead by decorating their graves? By proclamation of General John A. Logan of the Grand Army of the Republic, it was first widely observed on May 30, 1868.

"We should guard their graves with sacred vigilance. All that the consecrated wealth and taste of the nation can add to their adornment and security, is but a fitting tribute to the memory of her slain defenders. Let pleasant paths invite the coming and going of reverent visitors and fond mourners. Let no vandalism of avarice or neglect, no ravages of time testify to the present or the coming generations, that we have forgotten as a people the cost of a free and undivided Republic. If other eyes grow dull, and other hands slack, and other hearts cold in the solemn trust, ours shall keep it well as long as the light and warmth of life remains to us."
-General John Logan, General Order No. 11, May 5, 1868

Looking for educational things to do on this day, lest we forget too? Check out this website for activities, poems, word scrambles and searches, coloring pages and a fact sheet of America's Wars.

Here's a Memorial Day Internet Treasure Hunt! And finally, a video tribute intended for use in sermon illustrations. A good visual for the kids. Enjoy the long weekend and find a way for your family to remember...

They Are Fighting For Me CD

A brand new addition to our store is the Music CD: They Are Fighting For Me by Norm Schmidt.  This CD features 15 songs (seven originals) in a unique combination of Christian Gospel with a country flair and was created to honor our troops. In Norman's own words,

"When the war in Iraq was just a few months old, there were several high profile rescues where we as Americans were drawn into the reality of the War.  We saw the faces of our young people who were giving their lives. Troops with soldiers unknown to me were freely going into the darkness of night to fight for my freedom, for our freedom and to set another people free. I was humbled when I realized "They are fighting for me." I know that as our country continues to fight for freedom, each of our hearts will somehow be touched by those who give their lives in noble spirit. We need to pray fervently for our soldiers, ask God for a hedgerow of protection, and to help them march the final victory."

Each inspiring, encouraging CD sells for $12, with a portion of the proceeds going to provide CD's for those in active military service.

Our G.A. Henty Audio - True to the Old Flag: A Tale of the American War of Independence  offers ten hours (!) of listening in this MP3 CD. Learn about the Battles of Lexington and Concord, Bunker Hill, The Declaration of Independence, Washington Crossing the Delaware, Saratoga, and the final surrender of Cornwallis at Yorktown. Truly inspirational! The United States Navy Project Pack from Hands of a Child will teach your student about history, Special Forces, ranks and much more.

He had a great column ready for you all this week, but alas... it's lost somewhere in cyberspace. He'll be back with us next week. Now back to our regularly scheduled programming.

Military services are actively recruiting homeschoolers these days. Why? Because they are young people of character and academic ability. Want to know more about homeschoolers in the military? Visit Homeschool Legal Defense Association's website.

Now more than ever we need to remember all the military personnel and veterans among us. They need to know we are proud of them and that we honor them for their service to our country. God gave us this country and when we serve this country, we serve the God who gave it to us. May He sustain us through these uncertain times.

Do something different with your children and find a veteran or current military personnel and ask them about their tour of duty and don't forget to thank them for their service. Not only will you bless that person, your children will not soon forget the experience.

"For by thee I have run through a troop;
and by my God have I leaped over a wall."
Psalm 18:29
