July 4, 2007
|
Wow, we sure did hear from a lot of you after last
week's newsletter about television. I can't wait till we talk
about video games and computers!
This week though, I
hope our international readers will bear with us while we
celebrate the 4th of July with a little flag waving here. I've
always loved the 4th of July and seeing patriotism in action.
I guess it all started with celebrating the bicentennial when
I was 6 years old. Everyone in my small town dressed in
colonial costumes and draped the town in red, white, and blue.
There was just such a feeling of unity and pride.
And
that's something that I want to pass along to my children. I
want them to realize how blessed we are to live in the United
States of America, to see God's hand in our nation's history,
and to honor those who have fought and served in order for us
to have our freedoms.
We have been given so much. We
must all strive to live our lives worthy of such an honor.
To whom much is given, much
is expected. Luke

Home Where They
Belong Gena Suarez, TOS Publisher
Since Gena has been
travelling again, she asked Tia, our Senior Editor of HomeschoolBlogger, if she would
share a few words with you all.
And wow, did she! I
think she used a thesaurus and everything. Here now is Tia's,
Ode to
Fireworks....
Explosions light up
the sky in a crystalline display of color. My eyes drift from
the wonder that is unleashed over our heads to the look of
delight in the eyes of my loved ones.
Through the eyes of a
child comprehend the delicate chrysanthemum of light gracing
the night sky. We stand together, hands over hearts, in
respect to those that came before us. Take the memory of this
moment beyond today. Fireworks are brief, but the dark curtain
of the night sky has held wonders from the beginning of our
country to the end. Our lives are a flash of color in the
world, love and cherish each life that you touch today. Smile
at a stranger and by all means gaze in awe at the face of the
children as they look up into the sky waiting for the next
brief explosion of temporary radiance. As the glow fades from
the sky, remember to make your own brief light shine for God's
glory.

Homeschool Freebies Julie Nott, TOS Marketing Manager
Patriotism - devoted love, support, and defense of
one's country; national loyalty. That's what Webster says. I
love what Abraham Lincoln said:
"I like to see a man
proud of the place in which he lives. I like to see a
man live so that his place will be proud of him."
I have a high regard for young
people who want to join the military. They know the costs and
the risks and yet they do it anyway. As a mother, yes I would
be somewhat terrified if my children wanted to join the
service. But, I would be oh so proud. Why would I squelch
their desire to serve and protect our country? God bless these
brave folks who serve with such passion and
loyalty.
I'm away this week celebrating the Fourth of
July with my favorite people - family! We have a yearly
tradition of attending Family Camp in Wisconsin...it's the
highlight of our year! Here are some freebies to help you

The Familyman Todd Wilson, Familyman Ministries
I'm not sure,
but I think my patriotism is a little shallow. When I think of
Independence Day, I mostly think of the 4th of July
filled with flags, fireworks, and food. The whole family
gathers for the big weekend. Even in Northern Indiana, the
weather is hot . . . 4th of July hot, as grandpa
pulls hot dogs and hamburgers from the grill and the kids
shuck the corn.
Then there's the
big fireworks display. I'm not talking about the BIG ones that
the local Jaycees put on but the kinds that come in a package
from a parking lot fireworks' stand named "Crazy
Joe's".
The cousins 'aah
and ooh' while the aunts scold their husbands for allowing
kids to light dangerous fuses, and we fall asleep to the sound
of fireworks displays popping in the distance.
I'm half-ashamed
at the shallowness of my patriotism. I hardly think about the
incredible sacrifices made by so many men and women for the
freedoms that I enjoy. I forget that the blood of hundreds of
thousands of individuals paid for the flags displayed in every
yard.
In a way, I
guess that's okay. Those heroes died and sacrificed so that I
might enjoy corn on the cob on a hot, Indiana day oblivious to
the dangers that they faced.
So today . . .
enjoy the sun, a cold slab of watermelon, your family, and the
freedom that we so richly enjoy in this great country, and may
God continue to shed his grace on all of us.

Real, Todd |
Mercy in the Morning Deborah Wuehler, TOS Senior Editor
My nine year old son
asked me out of the blue last week to teach him the Pledge of
Allegiance. He repeated each word with me, trying to memorize
it. I felt guilty that I hadn't taught these important things
to my son or his younger siblings yet. Sometimes in my
endeavor to work with the older children, I forget about some
important things for the younger ones. This is one of those
important things.
My kids remembered me
telling the story that, as a child, I would have to repeat The
Pledge of Allegiance with my right hand over my heart every
morning during my elementary school years. In one school in
Virginia, we even had special class time to learn patriotic
songs. I learned all the words of "My Country 'Tis of Thee"
"God Bless America" "This Land" "America the Beautiful" "The
Star Spangled Banner" and many others. I don't even know if
these are still taught in our public schools anymore, but you
can find lyrics for all of these online.
This week would be a
great time to learn a patriotic song together and study The
Pledge of Allegiance. Here is a site where you
can print a copy for your own homeschool wall or bulletin
board.
This site also
includes a neat history of when the words "under God" were
added and many other interesting facts.
It would be a great
idea to use this as copy work all week, which will greatly aid
in its memorization:
"I pledge allegiance
to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the
Republic for which it stands: one Nation under God,
indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for
all."
May we not only
remember to teach The Pledge of Allegiance, but may we teach
our children to pledge their allegiance to the God who gave us
this great country. For a country (or a child) without
allegiance to God, is a country (or a child) on the path to
destruction. Let's keep on the path that leads to
life.
With you on the
path, - Deborah
