"I always look forward to your
newsletters because I'm always so blessed by the encouragement
and, well, just the overall good advice you all give ... but
this last issue was ESPECIALLY encouraging.
You all
seem so grounded and calm, so it was great to get good advice
about managing work and school better. But the most positive
part of your writing is that you never say anything is "how it
should be done." This newsletter was especially strong on that
point, but all of your newsletters give that same message, now
that I think about it. You just keep hammering away at us,
letting us know that it's OK to be individuals and to do
what we have to do the best we can in the Grace of the Lord,
and not to compare ourselves to anyone else.
I doubt
that you all realize how unique you are within the
homeschooling community, but I sure pray that you continue and
that God blesses you for it!"

"For
several years now I've read TOS and it has always been right
on. Now, with your weekly e-mail, I feel even closer to
you and the staff and other Christian homeschool families
worldwide. I want to respond every week and tell you
what a terrific job you're doing and how the Holy Spirit
really speaks through you!
Thank you for sharing every
week. Your vulnerability is not taken
lightly."

"I just
signed up for your newsletter and WOW! did it hit home.
This is my first year home with my two boys, ages 5 and 2.
We knew it would be tough
going to one salary, but it seems to be hitting especially
hard with the holidays approaching.
Your newsletter really lifted
me up and reminded me of what is important. We have accepted
that Christmas won't be a huge production this year, but the
rewards of being home together far outweigh toys that will
gather dust within weeks."

"I just read The Homeschool Minute and I just have to
thank you for being so strong biblically (I've noticed this in
your magazine and your emails). It seems in this day,
that that is becoming so rare.
So, I wanted to
thank you for encouraging me and countless others and to
encourage you to keep on being so biblically strong! I
pray that the Lord will bless your work
abundantly." -Heather, THM

I love
how Thanksgiving really cultivates an attitude of gratitude in
folks. I mean especially after last week's topic on dealing
with financial troubles, it's kind of nice to focus on all the
things we can be grateful for.
Last week the fuel pump
on our truck went out. Did that cost an arm and a leg? Yep,
but I am thankful that it didn't happen while I was away from
the house in it.
This weekend I was running late for a
flight home and then got hung up in airport security.
Thankfully the airline called security and since I was there,
they held the plane for me. Embarassing? Yes, but still I was
thankful!
And then guess what happened when I got home?
Our septic line started backing up into our bathtub. Nasty?
You betcha! That's when I was really thankful for a buddy
who came over to help us find the line and a husband and two
big strong sons who could dig up the line and ummm.... clear
things out.
You know what? Life is tough, but God is
good. I can't pretend that I don't do my fair share of whining
and bellyaching when bad stuff happens, but I'm working on it.
I want my kids to have an attitude of gratitude and I have to
model that for them - even when things are expensive,
embarassing, or icky.
May we all face each day with an
attitude of gratitude that helps us get through the tough
times.
Let the word of Christ dwell in you
richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom,
and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with
gratitude in your hearts to God. Col

Mercy Every Minute Deborah Wuehler, TOS Senior Editor
Historically, our
forefathers set precedence in the giving of thanks to the
Almighty God who in His great Providence brought them here and
kept them alive and prospering. This is one tradition of men
that ought to be practiced and practiced
well.
We feast because we
have been given the resources by God to feast. We feast
because our hearts are full of gratitude for all that God has
provided. We sit in peace at our tables because we have been
given liberty and freedom from God to do so.
Thanksgiving is by far
one of my favorite holidays. I hope to foster a heart of
gratitude in my children and remind myself of all that I have
to be grateful for. Some years it doesn't seem like much, and
some years it is more than enough, but all years are spent in
rest in the knowledge of the God of all providence, whose hand
is on my family.
Here is something I wrote last year
that articulates the Celebrating of Divine
Goodness. I hope you are able to take these
ideas and apply them around your family's table this year.
What I would really
like to say to you today is that I am so very thankful for
you. You have supported
us with your prayers and notes of encouragement. You have
supported us with your likeminded fellowship and have told
your friends about us. We are so thankful and filled with
gratitude. From all of us here at The Old Schoolhouse
Magazine, The Homeschool Minute, and The Schoolhouse
Store, may your Thanksgiving be blessed beyond
measure!
Oh, give thanks to the God of
heaven! For His mercy endures forever. Psalm
136:26

Schoolhouse Spotlight Dena Wood, Schoolhouse Store Manager
 Thanksgiving is the season of
gratefulness. We have several great products at The
Schoolhouse Store to help you teach your children about
Thanksgiving and being grateful.
Brand new to the
store, the Thanksgiving Project Pack
from Hands of a Child will help your student learn the
history, meaning and symbols of Thanksgiving. This 79-page
Project Pack includes a 13-page Research Guide about the
history, people and symbols of the holiday plus recipes to try
at home. It also includes 17 hands-on activities that
correlate to the information in the Research Guide to help
your student complete a lapbook on the Thanksgiving Holiday.
We also offer The Pilgrims Project
Pack and the Turkey Time Project
Pack from Hands of a Child.
We also have a great
E-Book: called the WisdomKids Copywork Program
Thankfulness Set. This is a scripture learning program
that teaches your children how scripture applies to their
lives! Your children can not only have God's word stored in
their minds, but also in their hearts! Using the copywork
method, your child will learn, verse by verse, how scripture
relates to them NOW, not just when they "get big".
Here
is something else we are grateful for at The Schoolhouse
Store! Kregel Publishing has put together a special set
of their Parker Twin Series books just for The Schoolhouse
Store! You get all 6 books in the series for just
$24.99! That is a savings of $16.95! You can click
HERE to learn more
about this series. This is a Schoolhouse Store exclusive
through the end of the year!
Make sure to take a look
at the Fall 2004 issue of The Old
Schoolhouse Magazine. Marilyn Moll "The Urban Homemaker"
talks about Thanksgiving in her home and shares eight recipes
for this special holiday.
Speaking of the holidays, be
sure to check out our Worship Keys interview
and the beautiful Christmas music in the
Schoolhouse Store! And if you have a budding pianist at your
house, you can purchase the Learn-at-Home Piano
lessons while you're shopping
there.

PS - Don't forget that we're going
to have a VERY special bonus package worth over $600 for our 21,000th
Store customer. It's a great time to shop with

It's Just Common Sense Ruth Beechick, Curriculum
Specialist
Next week is the
greatest American holiday and there's still time to invite
someone else to your family feast. Are you near a college that
enrolls foreign students? There no doubt are one or more
Christian organizations trying to minister to them. Call those
organizations and get the name and phone number of a student
who could use an invitation to Thanksgiving dinner. So the
student won't feel so out of water, tell him to bring a
friend, or two if you have room. You may have to point out
that you are a non-smoking family. But they will bow their
heads to pray before the meal; they are learning about an
American Thanksgiving.
Are you near a
military base? They will have a scrumptious Thanksgiving meal.
But if yours is at a different time or different day, there
may be a Christian away from home that would like to join your
family. A chaplain may be able to help you.
Near a major airfield?
Bad weather could bring a last minute opportunity. One year
the Anchorage terminal was full of soldiers from overseas who
could not get flights home on Thanksgiving. Local radio
stations explained the situation and we sent our teenage
driver down to pick up a couple of servicemen. He specified
that we were a non-smoking home and returned with two very
appreciative soldiers.
Nothing exciting in
your area? Then look around your church. Who is single or
alone now for any reason? A lone person can fit in even if,
and especially if, your feast already includes multiple
families.
American holiday. You'll be glad you did.

The Familyman Todd Wilson, Familyman Ministries
Wow! Is it possible
that Thanksgiving is in a week? That means Christmas is in . .
. auggg! Maybe it's better if we take one holiday at a time.
You know if you think about it, Thanksgiving is really only
thanksgiving if you GIVE someone thanks.
I mean if you just
think it and never say thank you, it's really Thankskeeping.
That's the great thing about the holiday. It gives us an
official reason to thank God and the people who need
thanking.
This year I've got a
plan. This writing assignment reminded me of it. Actually, I
stole the idea from my sister-in-law, but I've always believed
that the best parenting ideas are the ones you
steal.
It's really pretty
simple. All you need is a jar or container, a few slips of
paper, and a pencil or pen. Then place the container along
with the paper and pen in a conspicuous place like the kitchen
or dining room table.
Next gather the family
and instruct them that for the next week they are to write
down what they're thankful for and place it in the container.
Then, on or near Thanksgiving Day, take a few minutes after
the 'holiday madness' has calmed down and gather your family
together again and read the slips of paper out loud. Then pray
and thank God for many of the things written
down.
That's
it.
Matter of fact, I
think I'll announce it tonight at
dinnertime.
By the way, I'm
thankful for you and all that you do as homeschoolers. Keep up
the good work and . . .
