European American to reach California on foot from
the East Coast. This fur trader and mountain
man is said to have traveled through more unknown
territory than any other in his day.

African-American Rosa Parks, known
as the mother of the Civil Rights Movement, was
born on this day in 1913. In 1955, she
refused to give up her bus seat to a white man,
resulting in her arrest and sparking a bus boycott
in her hometown of Montgomery, Alabama.
