I have nothing
left to give. Nothing. And, I am too tired to try. A kind of depression settles
down on me, leading me to ask, "What is wrong with me?" I have no motivation
to continue this homeschool journey today, let alone any journey. Do you ever
feel that way? I do. I feel like I need something to get me motivated
in the right direction. Something that will take me away from this nothing.
Feelings of depression.
Perhaps the everyday demand of homeschooling is getting tiring. Spring is in
the air and I want to be in the air, too, not here in the house again. I'm fidgety
but feel chained. I feel the weight of gravity on my body holding me down, but
I want to soar. I lack the unction to even stand up.
How about a cup of coffee or a soda or maybe some of my favorite dark chocolate
to give me a boost of energy? That helps sometimes but certainly doesn't last
very long. It runs deeper than that, in that I know I need something internal
to encourage and inspire me, not just something external to compel my body into
motion.
I have struggled with these feelings on and off over
the years (mostly due to fluctuations in hormone levels
as when a baby is weaning, etc.), and I can look back
and say that, as real as the feelings were, they were
just that: feelings. Not fact. And, I have learned how
to address them when they arise.
So, aside from addressing any chemical instabilities,
as I am no doctor, I will share with you the things that
I desperately need to know and do when these feelings
take over:
- We need to know that we are not alone. Let your husband know your feelings
so that he can pray with you. Don't be afraid to ask your children for prayer,
either. It is also wise to use discretion about which friends you share with.
Find one or two close friends or prayer warriors who you know will continue in
prayer for you. Study the scriptures, especially the Psalms. This is like
medicine - you have to force yourself to take it, but it will do its work
in you if you can just get it down. Try to memorize a verse every time these feelings
start to take over. Here's one to get you started:
Psalm 32:7 - "Thou art my hiding place; thou
shalt preserve me from trouble; thou shalt compass me about with songs of deliverance.
Selah."
- We need to ask God to wake us up. This can be a spiritual battle, and we may
have been given "sleeping gas" from the enemy to lull us past complacency,
past apathy and into a self-focused, all-consuming passion about how we feel at
the moment. We can either choose to stay there and get comfortable while we are
at it, or we can ask God to shake us up and wake us up and get us moving in His
direction, obeying His commands for our life and family. Have your kids help you
make a simple dinner or help with more of the chores. Sit down and talk them through
it. Smile when you don't feel like it. Read aloud to the kids. Wake up and make
use of this "down" time to get closer to your family and your God.
Joel 3:9-10 - "Proclaim ye this among the Gentiles; Prepare war,
wake up the mighty men, let all the men of war draw near; let them come up:Beat
your plowshares into swords, and your pruning hooks into spears: let the weak
say, I am strong."
- Feelings change; God doesn't. We need a change of focus from our all-encompassing
deceitful feelings to our all-encompassing unwavering God. We can accept the fact
that we have nothing to give and allow the God who created all things from nothing
to use even our nothing for His glory. Give Him your nothing and let Him create
something from it. Sound impossible? He specializes in the impossible. He will
do it. He compasses you about with songs of deliverance.
Psalm 142 - "I cried unto the LORD with my voice; with my voice
unto the LORD did I make my supplication. I poured out my complaint before him;
I shewed before him my trouble. When my spirit was overwhelmed within me, then
thou knewest my path. In the way wherein I walked have they privily laid a snare
for me. I looked on my right hand, and beheld, but there was no man that would
know me: refuge failed me; no man cared for my soul. I cried unto thee, O LORD:
I said, Thou art my refuge and my portion in the land of the living. Attend unto
my cry; for I am brought very low: deliver me from my persecutors; for they are
stronger than I. Bring my soul out of prison, that I may praise thy name: the
righteous shall compass me about; for thou shalt deal bountifully with me."
These are not trite answers. They have been well tested,
and I am employing them even now as my baby is nursing
less and less and my feelings are fluctuating more and
more. If you force yourself to do these things, you will
gain the reward of getting through this difficult time
victorious, closer to the Lord, and able to look back
and see what the Lord your God has done. I know He will
deal bountifully with you as He has done and is doing
with me.
2 Tim. 1:12 - "I know Whom I have believed and am persuaded that
He is able to keep that which I've committed unto Him against that day."

(a
random page from my journal over the years) |
What I Have Learned From My Teacher
We spent the day yesterday at the university where my husband graduated. It was
their annual Picnic Day. Most departments had exhibits or hands-on activities
set up for children as well as adults. I had no idea I'd be so blessed at the
Geology Department's exhibit. We were there at the end of the day, and I was extremely
tired. One of their exhibits was a room with some big pieces of gray rock sitting
next to microscopes. On a slide under the microscope was a very thin slice of
the rock. I really didn't expect to see much, but I was surprised to see small,
brilliantly colored pebbles all bunched together forming the whole. I'd look at
the big piece of ugly, black rock and then to the kaleidoscope of color on the
slide.
I was awed at the Creator's hidden order, light, and color in these rocks. I could
clearly see God's glory revealed in His creation. I'll never look at a rock and
think of it in ordinary terms any more. I'll think of the Rock of my salvation
in all His light and glory. And I realize that there is a lot about Him that is
still hidden to me, but I hunger to know more as I attempt to put His word under
my heart's microscope. I am assured in Scripture that the Holy Spirit will lead
me into all truth and reveal to me the height and depth of the knowledge and love
of God.
What I Have Learned From My Children
My almost-five-year-old daughter loves prunes (she calls them 'prumes').
We just don't have them often enough. Today she was outside playing with the chickens
when she ran into the house with her hands up in the air and said, "Mom,
you won't believe it! I was so tricked! I saw this prume on the ground. It looked
exactly like a prume. But, it tricked me. When I went to pick it up, it was really
chicken poop!" I laughed out loud and, after controlling myself, agreed that
was indeed a dirty trick.
But, you know, I got to thinking that Satan wants to get us sidetracked by
the dung of life - the unimportant stuff - by making it look appealing or by telling
us that we just have to have it (or do it or be it). It looks so important
or feels so urgent to us at first; but when we get into it, that all-so-urgent
and important stuff turns out to be nothing but dung. We need to do as Paul did
and count all things as loss (or dung) except the knowledge of the Son
of God.
My Prayer
"Lord, let me see another glimpse of You in your light and glory. Lead me
into all truth that I can discern what is really important to You."

By Marybeth Whalen, Speaker Team Member, www.Proverbs31.org
Isaiah 60:19 - "The sun will no more be your light by day, nor will the
brightness of the moon shine on you, for the Lord will be your everlasting light,
and your God will be your glory." (NIV)
It was a gray, gloomy day at our house. The weather
was threatening rain and the skies were overcast.
The cold temperatures seemed to be seeping into the
house from outside. Inside the house, all of our
moods seemed to reflect the humdrum atmosphere as
we slumped on the couch and did not have much to
smile about. No one seemed motivated to do much except
pass the time staring outside. Ho-hum.
And then, the skies parted to make way for the sun. The clouds dispersed and
sunlight came bursting through. All of a sudden, our once-gloomy home was literally
filled with the sun's light. In a moment, the whole atmosphere of our home was
transformed by the sun's invading presence. "Mommy, mommy," my 3-year-old
son said excitedly, "The sun's in our house!"
The light of the sun did make our house feel different. The cold weather seemed
to vanish and the hopeless, despondent feeling we all had had seemed to disappear
magically. It really did feel, as my son put into words, that the sun was in our
house. Later I reflected on that moment and my son's exclamation. I realized the
spiritual lesson God had given me on that ordinary day.
"The sun's in our house!" my son had exclaimed.
Is the Son in our house? I wondered. Am I allowing the Son's transforming presence
to invade our lives and change the tone of our household? Am I allowing His love
to add warmth to our days, no matter what the circumstances around us? I have
the Son to call on whenever I have need - but do I?
I began to think about how I can create an atmosphere of faith in our home.
How can I make sure that the Son's bright presence is apparent to my children
and husband, and to all who enter our home? I have a few suggestions for how to
invite the Son to be a part of your home and create an atmosphere of faith in
the process:
- Surround yourself with Scripture throughout your
home. Post verses written on index cards on your
bathroom mirror, on your refrigerator, over your
sink, etc.
- Consider purchasing framed calligraphy of your
favorite verses to hang on the walls.
- Play praise music in your home during the day. Sing loudly - even if your
kids grimace when you do!
- Begin the day by reading the Bible aloud before
members of the family go their separate ways.
- Pray aloud together whenever you can.
- Ban the enemy from your home by not engaging
in activities that glorify him. This includes words
used, websites visited, TV programs, and video
games or videos watched that are not pleasing to
Jesus.
- Try to have attitudes and actions that reflect
the character of Jesus toward one another.
- Go through your house and invite the Son into
each room. Pray over the activities that take place
in those rooms and ask for Jesus to be a part of
these things in the life of your family. Pray for
God to pour out His blessings on your home!
How can you make sure that you have an attitude of praise and an atmosphere
of faith each day in your home? Invite the Son in and let His light warm up your
home and all those who enter it. May your family be able to exclaim, "The
Son's in our house!"

Dear Lord, I Feel Like a Whale!
Knowing God's touch throughout your pregnancy - and beyond
By Jane Bullivant
Kregel/Monarch Books
kregel.gospelcom.net
As the title of this book suggests, many of us feel
like a whale (or close to it) when we are pregnant. Our
feelings run the breadth of jubilation to depression,
and Jane Bullivant explores them all in Dear Lord,
I Feel Like a Whale! She does so using her own experiences
and the experiences of other moms in order to proclaim
that God is with us throughout the entire experience
of motherhood.
Jane wrote this book with a profusion of candor and wit, and if you have been
pregnant, you will find yourself smiling as you empathize with her - whether for
her unusual cravings or emotional upheavals or anything pregnancy-related in between.
And if you are in your first pregnancy, you will have many, if not all, of your
pregnancy questions answered forthrightly.
Jane has very practical advice for the mom-to-be and
the new mother. She goes over every aspect of pregnancy,
from the time you first find out you are pregnant on
through the birth and then to the mothering of your new
infant.
I was particularly blessed by the way she draws the reader close to her heart
for God and His Word throughout the book. For example, her section titled "Download
the strength of heaven" has this Scripture and exhortation:
"Yet, if you devote your heart to him and stretch out your hands to him,
you will stand firm and without fear." (Job 11:13-15)
"It's your choice to live in trepidation of what could happen, or to download
some of heaven's strength and trust in your God. Holding on to him now will train
you well for your mumship."
Jane is from the UK, so a lot of the wording reflects that, such as, "mums"
(moms), "duvet" (bed), "pram" or "buggy" (stroller),
and "treacle pudding and marmite" (sounds interesting and possibly edible!).
You can almost hear her accent as you read, which gives this book extra novelty
and makes reading it that much more enjoyable.
I would recommend this book especially for the first-time mother who does not
know what to expect with all the phases of motherhood. It is also a great encouragement
for any mother needing a refresher course on "Knowing God's touch throughout
your pregnancy and beyond."

Christa
Sterken brings us "Bible on the Shelf"
A new devotion sent in by you, our readers,
will be highlighted here each month.
Bible on the Shelf
By Christa Sterken
"Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you." - James
4:8
While unpacking after a recent move, I started the arduous process of unloading
my book collection. This would be no small job, so I was prepared for a workout.
What I wasn't prepared for was the lesson I would soon be reminded of hidden there
on the shelf. Seeing all the familiar friends coming out into view again comforted
me. I was noticing the interesting titles I have of Christian books, shelves of
them, many I have yet to read. I have a habit of buying fabulous-sounding books,
intending to read them soon. Often, though, they sit gathering dust while I get
focused on other things. There are so many subjects to choose from that sometimes
I feel overwhelmed by the choices.
I must confess that I often feel like that in the
rest of my life, overwhelmed by the number of things
to think about. It is so easy to do; we all have so
many commitments vying for our time. All of our lives
are different, but they do tie together with a similar
thread. They all can steal our time away, leaving little
for the stillness to sustain us, our quiet time with
God.
In times like these, life is smoother when I am focused on God and His plan
for my life. However, occasionally my quiet time gets put on my "to-do"
list with everything else, another thing to check off the list. This is certainly
not the way it should be. Our time spent with God is a relationship, not an obligation.
We cheat ourselves out of peace and guidance when we lose sight of what should
be our primary goal. We have someone there to offer us assistance, an open
ear, a shoulder to cry on, and a friend to sing praises with.
As I scanned the titles, I realized my Bible was neatly lined up with the others.
A shelf is no place for my Bible - easy to forget and just admire the cover. Our
time with God is the lifeline that keeps us going, giving us the strength, comfort,
and hope we need each and every day. James 4:8 says, "Draw nigh
to God, and he will draw nigh to you," reminding us if we feel distant
from God to stop what we are doing and find Him. He is here, waiting for us with
open arms to welcome us home.

Haptoon: Keeping Up With The Joneses - Are we content with
our lot in life, or are we always looking over our shoulders to see how our neighbors
are faring? Are we happy for our neighbors when they're showing off
their new car, or do we murmur in our hearts and question why God doesn't bless
us with something new and shiny?
Jesus warns us to be on our guard against all kinds
of greed. The deceitfulness of wealth is like thorns
that chokes our fruitfulness for God (see Matthew 13:22).
Lord, help us to be content with what we have. Instead
of trying to keep up with the Joneses, let us humble
ourselves before the Lord, and He will lift us up.
