Composer Johann Pachelbel was born on this day in 1653.

September 5th

Sir Malcolm Campbell set a speed record of 301.29 mph on this day in 1935.
How far would Campbell have traveled if he kept that pace for 6 hours? How about 20 minutes? Learn more about the math formula "distance = rate x time." Visit this site for a pretty good explanation. If you have kids who really like this kind of stuff, let them try this online quiz.

September 7th

The first use of a submarine in warfare was on this day in 1776 during the American Revolution.
This site teaches how a submarine works and even includes some animation. If you're really ambitious, let your kids loose on this "build a mini submarine" project and lesson plan. Oh! One more thing...you've got to eat lunch today why not make it submarine sandwiches!  


September 8th

Antonin Dvorak is another composer born this month (1841).

September 9th

The "marathon" came to be because a Greek runner saved the city of Athens from destruction when he ran 26-miles to warn its citizens of a surprise attack on this day in 490 B.C.
Today would be a great day to go for a walk, talk about distance, and think about how hard it would be to run 26 miles! What landmarks are 26 miles away from your house? Click and print our marathon maze for some less tiring fun.


September 12th

Henry Hudson began exploring the Hudson River on this day in 1609.
There are lots of interesting creatures living in and around rivers and streams. Visit this site for a slide show of river creatures or design your own wacky, slimy, or gooey river creature.


September 13th

The greatest female pianist of the 19th century was Clara Schuman. She was born on this day in 1819

September 15th

Transcontinental mail service began on this day in 1858, making possible for letters from the east coast of the U.S. to reach to be delivered to people on the west coast!
It took a long time though, in fact it took almost a month! Today communication around the world is instantaneous. Write a letter to someone today, either through email, or the post office. How long do you think it will take for your letter to reach its destination?


September 16th

The largest land run in U.S. history occurred on this day in 1893 in Oklahoma. Design your own homestead!
If you were awarded 100 acres for a homestead, what would you do with it? What crops would you plant? Would you have animals? Would you build a log cabin or another type of house? Draw a picture and write a story about homesteading in Oklahoma in the 19th century. Use your imagination!


September 26th

American composer George Gershwin was born on this day in 1898.

Will Rogers' first movie opened in New York on this day in 1918. The movie starring the popular cowboy was called Laughing Bill Hyde.
Besides acting, Will Rogers' was famous for his witty sayings. Visit this site to read some Will Rogers' quotes. For young buckaroos, print out our cowboy coloring page!
