November 4th
The entrance to King Tutankhamen's tomb was discovered in 1922
. Ancient Egypt is fascinating! This event is great for jump start learning in many areas. Here are several suggestions:

Creative writing: Write as short story about an archaeologist (could be you!) and an exciting adventure in Egypt.

Art: Can you draw a 3D pyramid? Spend a few minutes on this site and you'll be a pro!

Geography: What's the difference between the "black land" and "red land" of Egypt? Find the answer and more, including several maps to explore.

History: Learn more about the discover of King Tut's tomb with this National Geographic online feature called At the Tomb of Tutankhamen.

Just for fun: Learn how to write your name in Egyptian Hieroglyphics



November 6th
Modern composer John Philip Sousa was born in 1854.
You'll recognize some of this famous band leaders music! Plus, learn more about his life with our fun composer word search.





November 7th
Canada's transcontinental railroad was completed in 1885
. In 1869, the U.S. made travel from east to west coast possible by train. Canada followed shortly after, with it's own transcontinental railroad. Print out this railroad maze and see if you can find your way across the nation of Canada.



November 10th
Sir Henry Stanley found the missing David Livingstone in 1871, In a small village in Tanzania.
Upon finding the Doctor, Stanley gave his famous remark, "Dr. Livingstone, I presume." Africa is famous for it's amazing animals. Click and print these African animals coloring pages for hours of fun! Each coloring page gives the option of viewing a color photograph of the animal.



November 16th
A traveling salesman from Missouri arrived in New Mexico in 1821, forging what became known as the Santa Fe Trail.
This well traveled trail split in one area, giving travelers the choice of a longer mountain route, or a shorter, easier desert route with the risk of attack by Native Americans. What present-day states did the Santa Fe Trail pass through? Print off this map and fill in the names.



November 21
Pilgrims signed the Mayflower Compact in 1620, while aboard the Mayflower anchored in Massachusetts Bay.
This historic document laid the foundation for government in the New World! Read the text of the Mayflower Compact and see an image of the original document. With Thanksgiving coming up later this week, check out these Thanksgiving crafts.

 

November 29th
Richard Byrd and 3 companions took off in their plane in 1929, beginning an historic flight across Antarctica. They became the first to fly over the South Pole
Burrrrrrrrr! I get cold just thinking about Antarctica! It is a stunningly beautiful place, however, with interesting wildlife. See for yourself in this online photo gallery! In honor of this first flight over the continent of snow and ice, have a cold treat today! (or drink hot chocolate and stay wam!)
