My name is Denise Osorio, I was born in New York, but have been living since I was 7 years old in Caguas, Puerto Rico. I am the proud mother of 3 beautiful children (2 girls: 10 and 8 yrs. old and a boy: 7 yrs. old). In 2002 my world changed when my son was diagnosed with autism; this situation changed our way of life; therapies, IEP's, looking for better ways to help my son improved and emerge from the condition. I decided to homeschool my son full time when we say that he wasn't having any progress because of the lack of individualized attention. He has progressed from being a boy with typical autistic symptoms to an almost "normal" child. He enjoys learning and being with others, other than being an active child and having language delays, his condition goes unnoticed.

Being a homeschooler has opened our world to incredible adventures, good and bad. This has helped us to learn to look the world from a different perspective. Homeschooling a special needs child has made me look in a particular perspective, of acceptance, tolerance and with an open mind to different people, I have learned, by experience to not judge a book from a cover.

Field Trips

Puerto Rico has scores of museums exhibiting everything from millennia-old Indian artifacts to 20th century modern art. The most prestigious collection of fine art in the Caribbean is at the Ponce Museum of Art, where you can see the famous “Flaming June,” in addition to a large collection of Colonial period religious art.

To get an idea of the museums, check out the San Juan Area, the Eastern Region, the Southern Region, and the Western Region. Much of the information was gathered from the PR Tourism website (www.gotopuertorico.com
