A Story Piece by Piece: Monica Mouse Leaves Her House, is a Level 1 story, written by Jan Jones for children ages 5 to 6, on a jigsaw puzzle. Here's how this puzzle works: the child sorts the pieces into two groups according to the numbers printed on the back of each piece. The child then assembles the #1 pieces to be able to read the first part of the story and see part of the illustration; then he or she assembles the #2 pieces to read the rest of the story and complete the puzzle. Each story is designed to build vocabulary, and the notes printed on the puzzles help to develop reading and language skills.
Jan Jones has created puzzles with stories for Levels 1 through 5, for ages 5 through 10+. This really is a great way to provide children with a hands-on activity that is fun and educational at the same time. As I reviewed the Level 1 story, all of my children got involved. Several times I found my older boys having fun putting the puzzle together and reading the story, as well as my younger daughters. This turned out to be fun for the whole family.
I highly recommend A Story Piece by Piece for any new or seasoned reader. Our family loves puzzles, and these were enjoyable and educational at the same time. I also think that this puzzle-building approach would be a great, non-stressful means of offering practice for a struggling reader.
