I found Relaxed Record Keeping by Mary Hood to be a very encouraging overview of how to keep records. Mary Hood has several books about a more relaxed approach to homeschooling, and I am eager to read them after feeling so encouraged by this one. The approximately 30 pages of this small booklet break record keeping into ten simple steps, which go from finding out what your states laws are to preparing for college entrance. She gives detailed information on keeping records in journal form and includes many sample entries. Also included were sample end-of-year assessment reports, in the event you find yourself in a state that requires such things.

Because Mary Hood has children who have actually graduated and gone to college while using this approach, I felt confident that her methods are credible. Having read this booklet, I feel much more assured that my own records are reasonable and would hold up under official scrutiny.
