I love to read, and I especially enjoy reading advice on how to bring up children for the Lord. Fathers and Daughters, by David and Elysse Barrett, a father-daughter writing team, was full of useful ideas and anecdotes on raising our precious daughters. The book's twelve chapters cover many aspects of raising daughters from childhood to adulthood. There is a particular focus on developing a family vision and equipping our children to effect change in the culture.

Chapters alternate between the father and daughter so that you get both perspectives. There are many Scripture references to support their viewpoints, and although they are a very conservative family, they don't lay things out in terms of rules. Rather, they focus on how we can best glorify God. I enjoyed the many anecdotes, including the very sweet tradition the father has of taking his daughters out for a special outing to talk about saving their heart for their husband.

Though I enjoyed reading the father and daughter accounts together in one volume, I could see how it might be hard for a typical male to read through the very feminine chapters directed at daughters. Altogether I found it an encouraging book and really appreciated the authors' love for the Lord and for their family. It is a blessing to have such an example laid before us as we seek to glorify God in our families.
