Scripture to Grow On is a 96-page, spiral-bound workbook, designed for ages 7-10, that contains character lessons based on the Ten Commandments. Each trait has three related Bible verses to use for handwriting/memory work and then an application page. Author Cheryl A. Cook suggests completing 2-3 lessons per week, but she stresses that you can adapt it to your own teaching style.
Followers of Charlotte Mason's methods and notebooking/lapbooking devotees will especially love this book. The memory work and copywork are right on target with the suggested age range and are both instructional and enjoyable. Younger students can get a lot out of it too if you go at a slower pace or require only one memory verse per character trait. If you choose to use it with a younger student, be warned that the font for the chosen verses is not handwriting-friendly. You can retype the lessons yourself in one of the so-called handwriting fonts or write out a model for the student to copy. This is a small sacrifice, I think, for such quality lessons. Maybe the author would be willing to change the font in an updated edition.
I would also like to see a more in-depth application added for ages 8-10. The current applications are great for the younger crowd, but I think you can get more out of an 8-10 year old than, say, tracing their hand and writing one word to describe what they learned about courage.
Overall, I think it is a reasonably priced, quality resource by a talented homeschooling mother.
