Read and Understand Fiction Grades 4-6+ is a reading comprehension workbook containing 22 stories with four comprehension worksheets for each story. The stories include modern fiction, fables, historical fiction, poetry, folktales, and more. The worksheets focus on comprehension, vocabulary, analysis, parts of speech, creative writing, and more. The workbook is reproducible.

I must say I was not impressed with the stories chosen for the book. I didn’t find one that I enjoyed reading, and they didn’t seem to be compiled with the best of editing. The stories are “average.” However, the activity pages following each story are wonderful. Like many other Evan-Moor products, the worksheets are of excellent educational quality and are some of the best reading comprehension activities I have seen.

The book is designed so that a child can work through it completely independently, or have teacher involvement. Teaching tips are included in the front. There is an answer key in the back for every activity.

Evan-Moor products are generally solid, and this one fits the bill. If you are looking to supplement your child’s reading with the goal of increasing comprehension, this would be a good choice for the strong fourth grade reader up through early junior high. Evan-Moor also offers several other versions of this same workbook. This workbook was “fiction,” but they also offer Myths & Legends, Science, and Non-Fiction. These I haven’t seen, but would be hopeful that the non-fiction stories would be of better quality. In addition, Evan-Moor offers many more Read and Understand workbooks in a variety of categories for grades K through 6+, which you can learn more about by visiting their website.
