StrengthsExplorer is an online assessment that, together with a Youth Workbook and a Parent Guide, is designed to help students from 10 to 14 years old discover their top three themes of talent. To take the assessment, the student visits the website and enters the unique access code included in the package for one student only. In order to have additional students take the assessment, you would have to purchase additional access codes.

I had my 13-year-old son take the assessment, and I was quite impressed with the results! The online quiz was easy to read and took about 10 or 15 minutes to complete. Then, we received a "Top 3 Report" showing us his top three themes of talent together with action items for him and for the adults in his life (parents and teachers).

I had an "aha" moment when I saw his three themes: Competing, Relating, and Discoverer. They explained so much about who my son is. For example, we knew that he loved to win at basketball. But we couldn't figure out why, if he wanted to win so badly, he kept passing the ball to whoever called out for it, whether they were likely to make the shot or not. Now we realize that in his activities, the relationships are just as important to him as the game itself.

At $25 per access code, this assessment is a worthwhile investment in your relationship with your child. This is different from an assessment of learning styles because it relates to all areas of life. It will tell you where your child's strengths are so that you can build on those strengths and give more support where it is needed. The activities in the parent's guide will help you focus on positive words you can say to your child, affirming his talents. This tool will benefit your family, helping your pre-teen to learn more about himself and to focus on his strengths before he heads into the teen years.
