Super Star R and L / Super Star S, Z, and SH Review by Kathy Gelzer

Here are two comprehensive speech therapy books covering two of the most common speech sound problems. Parents will have the information, encouragement, and tools to tackle their children's articulation troubles with the expert help of Deborah Lott, who holds a Masters of Education in Speech Pathology.

These "Super Star" materials are down to earth with concise instruction and lots of games and activities. The two-fold purpose of the books is laid out in the introduction: "to assist parents in helping their children achieve developmentally appropriate speech and to provide some useful resources for practice" of the specific sounds. Early detection and correction is Deborah Lott's philosophy. A disclaimer states these books are not a solution for a large number of speech delays, stuttering, or physical problems affecting speech, all of which require professional help.

The books give tips on how to tailor the lesson plans to your individual child, general tips for any sound, as well as specific suggestions for the difficult ones.

Separate words lists are included for the specific sounds each book covers. These are useful for the many suggested games and activities. Author Deborah Lott provides a list of 13 easy-to-implement ideas for practicing sounds: making a scrapbook of pictures with the target sound, oral reading, and a sound game hunt, to name a few.

The balance of the books is activity and game pages with clear, easy-to-read print and graphics. The main idea behind these is to provide fun, structured opportunities for the child to practice saying the target sounds. There are questions to answer, matching activities, sentences to repeat, and simple "board" games to play. Illustrated cards to cut out for "Memory" or "Concentration" are in the back. You and your child will find plenty of variety here.

I highly recommend Super Star R and L and Super Star S, Z, and SH as a home resource for helping your child with his or her speech difficulties. These books make the whole area of speech therapy doable and fun!
