Touchdown Nouns is a lovely, full-color, 32-page book. It is one of six books in the Weekly Reader's "Grammar All-Stars" series. Children read along as Buzz Star and his niece, Lizzie, announce the Blue Ribbon Bowl (the biggest football game of the year). In the process they learn all about nouns. This book painlessly covers common nouns, proper nouns, singular nouns, plural nouns, possessive nouns, and noun signals.
On every page, different types of nouns are in boldface type, each followed by a "Touchdown Tip" (an explanation and definition of the bold face term) that is located in a specially marked box. For example, in the beginning of the story the words "Lizzie," "game," "football," and "Buzz Star" are in boldface type. The "Touchdown Tip" that follows is the definition of a noun. This allows the reader to see the grammar concepts he is learning about in the context of a story, and the remaining types of nouns are taught in the same fashion. The final three pages of the book have no nouns in boldface type, and the student is challenged to find as many nouns as possible.
My 9, 8, and 6-year-old boys each found it fun to read, and it helped to reinforce their knowledge of nouns. Touchdown
Nouns is an enjoyable addition to any elementary grammar curriculum, especially if your children are sports fans.
