We can learn so much from observing nature. Of course, we can study plants and creatures from a life science perspective, examining forms and functions. But from a different view, we can study those forms, function, and habits and marvel at how all creation offers lessons to us. That is what this book is about. This book is an unabridged collection of 29 stories published between 1855 and 1871. Mrs. Gatty had studied natural history first-hand and from books and had a desire to share her knowledge from a moral perspective.
For example, in the story entitled "Daily Bread," we learn about the habits of a tortoise and a robin. The tortoise makes great efforts to find and eat plenty of food in preparation for his winter hibernation. Meanwhile, the robin has no great concern for gathering extra portions of food. He sings and enjoys his surroundings, having faith that the food he needs to sustain himself will always be there. In fact, the robin does encounter some difficulty over the course of the winter, but, indeed, he continues to sing and always has enough to eat. When the tortoise awakes from his hibernation, he is relieved to see the robin looking so well, but he cannot believe the robin was truly so happy and as fortunate as all that!
The story is filled with observations about nature and about God's character. The writing style is informative and engaging; dialogue intersperses with factual information to maintain interest. The book is targeted for independent readers of age nine and up, but it would also make a fine read-aloud for younger kids.
