One thing I have wished for in my ten years of home educating is a math enthusiast to be nearby for the early years of teaching. I often have the nagging thought, "I bet there is a better way to introduce this" or "I know this could be easier." Well, if you share my longing, search no more. Gisela Hausmann, creator of the Hands On Mathematics CDs offers us multi-sensory, hands-on help for learning the numbers one through ten, and then how to do arithmetic with those numbers.
In Hands on Mathematics: Numbers 1 - 10, children are taught to associate numbers with items from real-life. Building on the familiarity of the objects makes learning the numbers more interesting, therefore easier.
Included with the program are ten number introduction pages, ten worksheets with exercises (all printable from your computer), and tips to help with math skills in five minutes each day.
Hands on Mathematics, Arithmetic from 1-10 is a simple, fool-proof (yes, money back guaranteed) method for learning arithmetic. It is simple (using only finger paint, household items and worksheets), it is focused (with no distracting overload of extra information), and it is multi-sensory (urging students to hear - touch - do.).
The program includes detailed illustrations that help teach the concepts, lesson plans and printable worksheets. A footnote from the author (via their website): I have always been an advocate against kindergartners learning to count to 100 before they can add and subtract within numbers from 1 to 10 fluently. I believe that all solid knowledge is learned in a pyramidal way, where each upper layer is sitting on a solidly built lower layer or layers. If the very bottom layer is not a truly solid layer; all layers on top of it are built on a weak foundation. Thus, it is imperative that children first know the numbers from 1 - 10 "in their sleep" before they learn more knowledge.

Mathematics is a very common sense discipline, but many of us have been taught in ways that strip us of our senses. For a small cost, you can use Hands on Mathematics to help your children learn numbers, adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing with the numbers one through ten, thus building a strong foundation for their mathematical future.
