The Junior Phonics game is a beginners phonics program, cleverly disguised as games. Junior Phonics comes complete for teaching letters, sounds, and three-letter words - the beginning basics of phonics.
Game boards, game markers, an alphabet chart, sounds chart, spinner, four card decks for games, "Red Ed" reader book, Ed (vowel) chart, stickers, a VHS video, and an audio CD and play book. Junior Phonics is an engaging way to teach children their letters, sounds, and beginning reading skills.
Learn along with the character "Ed" as you learn your letters, and sounds through games...card games and board games such as "Fat Cat", "Cover Up", and "Middle Match". Junior Phonics starts with learning and identifying the letters, both upper and lower case, moves on to letter sounds, vowels, consonants, and moves into short three-letter words.
Junior Phonics is recommended to be used for 3-6 year olds (give or take a year on either side of that, depending on your child) and makes for a fun way to introduce phonics by way of playing games. This is easily used in a homeschool setting and for teaching to more than one child at a time.
Junior Phonics certainly does the job it sets out to do, by teaching the very basic phonics to our littlest homeschoolers, but seems a bit steep in the price department at $119.95...for teaching letters and sounds and basic 3 letter words.
If you are looking for a nice quality, pre-packaged beginners phonics program that is fun, and don't mind parting with over $100.00, this is for you. Most homeschooling families I know could create something very similar on their own, with the same results, for much less out of the family budget.

The Junior Phonics Game (intended for ages 3-6) is a great tool for teaching young children the elementary basics of reading. This is my first time teaching phonics and I am very pleased with this enjoyable, easy to use program! The game comes with everything you need to get started; a delightful video, games, and charts. The first section of the video engages the child by having them sing along while using the included alphabet chart, teaching them the names of the letters. The second part of the video teaches basic consonant sounds and short vowel sounds with the use of a colorful sound chart. The last section of the video introduces the child to blending the sounds they have learned and reading words. The charts (which we had laminated at a school supply store) are fun and attractive to young children. The puppet on the video, "Ed", has a pointer that he uses on the charts, so we decided to purchase a pointer for our son (age 4). He loves using it on his charts while watching the video and if needed while playing the games.
My son looks forward to the games that are played after each section of the video. I like that the games are not overwhelming and each stage eases the child at his own pace. I'm glad they demonstrate on the video how the games should be played for the parents and child. After watching his section of the video my son is always eager to play "Cover Up" (like bingo but with letters) or "Fat Cat" (using the sound chart and video to sound out letters). The last game, "Middle Match", helps your child to combine the sounds they have learned and to form words. I?m delighted to say that my son is now sounding out nearly all of the letters and is now forming some of the simple words included in the game! What I also think is great is that my two year old is even picking up on letter recognition! I highly recommend The Junior Phonics Game for beginners; it's a perfect balance of fun and hands-on learning that is sure to get them off to a great start!
