First Steps in Faith is another great unit study on CD-Rom from Amanda Bennett. This one is a little different than her others. Rather than being written for multilevel teaching at lower and upper grades, First Steps in Faith is specifically for your pre-K to second grade students. Secondly, this study was adapted by Bennett from a classic 1885 book, First Steps For Little Feet in Gospel Paths, by Charles Foster.
I would describe this study as a basic beginning Bible curriculum. It has short, simple Bible stories with questions at the end. The best thing to do when using First Steps in Faith is to print the stories out when needed and read them to your child, asking the simple questions afterward to make sure they understood the story. Also, each story on the CD-Rom is internet linked to one or more coloring pages relating to the lesson, which can also be printed out for your child.
There are 92 stories in the study, which begin with a creation account, and include a simple story of the angel helping Hagar and Ishmael, and Daniel with the lions. The rest of the stories cover the life of Jesus: His birth, baptism, temptation, miracles, parables, crucifixion, resurrection, appearing to the Disciples, and ascension. Extra coloring pages are included for use without internet connection, if desired. There is also a helpful appendix of resource links, such as a timeline, map of Israel at the time of Christ, and online Bible land tour.
Although First Steps in Faith is sold as a unit study, it is more like a children's Bible storybook. Therefore, I think it would appeal to all types of teaching methods. I do wish that more stories from the Old Testament were included, but nevertheless, it is a great first Bible study for young children. We loved it!
