Geographic Literacy through Children's Literature covers five themes in the area of geography: location, place, human-environmental relations, movement, and regions. The primary purpose of this book is to help you discover ways to integrate geography into your already existing curriculum. The author suggests that first and foremost, the reading of a picture book is meant to be an enjoyable experience for both student and teacher. Begin by reading for sheer pleasure savoring the experience of the rich language and beautiful illustrations. Afterwards, the book may be revisited for exploration. In this way, every parent-teacher will be able to incorporate geography into their daily activities. Ms. Rogers suggests that some picture books may appear to be too easy, but can contain very sophisticated concepts so be careful not to overlook those hidden treasures. Good teachers are those who are not afraid to seize the moment and take off on the incredible journey of learning.

The actual teaching portion and body of the book is only 92 pages long. Each chapter explains one of the five themes listed above, boasts a page of simple teaching suggestions and expanding the concept ideas, and a few projects with detailed instructions. Some chapters boast more information and ideas, but all chapters list some books, which may be used to explain and illustrate the focus topic. Additional books are listed for further research in various areas. The main idea of this portion of the book (as I grasp it) is to teach you how to teach geographical concepts through literature, or to train you to think geographically when teaching other concepts. For those of you who desire to teach a specific unit study focusing on geographic subject matter will find suggestions within the book.

After reading over and understanding the main body, you will note the large Appendix A in pages 93 - 141 of the book. This is a list of over 160 books containing a summary paragraph followed with several activities listed by grade level. Subjects covered and geographic themes are listed. Finally, Appendix B boasts a small list of teacher and useful resources. Although this book is not laid out by individual reading selections in the main body, the Appendix A covers a multitude of books. It is a useful tool in accomplishing just what the author intended-to intertwine the teaching of geography with other subjects. I found it valuable in adding information to our studies through the use of good literature.
