Humpties Grammar is a two part "totally delightful" grammar course for grades 3 through 4. Just as the name implies Humpties is an "egg-ceptionally" gentle approach to introducing grammar to young elementary students. Combining visual imagery with hands on activity provides a concrete way for each student to conceptualize the abstract concepts presented in grammar instruction.
The first book in the series, Humpties - Parts of Speech with "Eggceptional" Personalities, introduces the Humpties characters: Father Noun, Mother Verb, Conjunction Billy and so on. An opening page introduces the character, explains the part of speech, and provides an example for the child. This is followed by a worksheet. On this page, the child cuts out the Humpties character, then glues it in the appropriate place beneath a sentence identifying the correct part of speech. Additional practice pages are provided throughout. Book I covers nouns, verbs, conjunctions, pronouns, adjectives, adverbs, preposition, and interjections. An answer key is provided in the back for those of us who are a bit rusty in this area!
Book II, Building Sentences with the Humpties, uses the Humpties characters to explain subjects, predicates, and objects. An introduction to sentence diagramming is presented. Contents include "What is a sentence?" and "Every sentence has a subject and a predicate." Other topics covered are compound subjects and predicates, along with a discussion of the purpose of sentences. Building Sentences with Humpties is a little meatier than book I, however, it is recommended that all levels begin with the Humpties- Parts of Speech as a general review and introduction to the characters. Practice exercises, additional activities, and an answer guide are featured in book II as well.
