Special Needs Child? Yes, You CAN Homeschool!
With the exponential growth of homeschooling around the world, more parents of children with special learning needs are choosing to provide home-based instruction. Parents are discovering that homeschooling allows them to provide their child with a completely individualized education that caters to their physical or intellectual needs, allows plenty of time for hands on learning, life skills instruction, and offers the child the opportunity to thrive. While some children are effectively mainstreamed into the public schools, others don't fare so well. Organizations around the world are now offering conventions, support and resources parents and professionals who work with special needs children. The staff of The Old Schoolhouse is committed to bringing those vital resources to homeschooling parents.
Every issue of The Old Schoolhouse Magazine offers the "Resource Room", a department focusing on special education. Articles in the "Resource Room" offer insight and suggestions for educating children with different learning methods and abilities, including gifted and talented learners, and interviews with the founders of organizations and companies catering to special educators. Christine Field, author of Homeschooling the Challenging Child, is a frequent contributor and our lead reviewer of special education products. In the Summer 2005 edition of TOS, readers enjoyed the debut of our new annual expanded "Resource Room" section. This special feature offered more than triple the resources…twenty-two pages worth of visits to special education conventions, interviews, and information about homeschooling gifted children along with introductions to art and music therapy and American Sign Language!
Be sure to keep an eye on our online "Resource Room". In addition to showing you some of the articles found in our print publication, this is the place to find exclusive web-only articles offering information, assistance, and encouragement while you homeschool your special needs child!
