Homeschooling: Turning Hearts Home

By Chris Jeub

Focus on the Family has long supported home education. And why not? Homeschoolers are doing what Focus has done for 25 years: "focusing on the family" and "turning hearts toward home."

As homeschool graduates enter college and the workplace in increasing numbers, society is seeing the fruit of the homeschool movement's labors. For example, I have an 18-year-old daughter who is taking college classes at night while working fulltime as an office manager. She is known for-and paid well for-her strong work ethic and ability to learn quickly.

But I shouldn't brag too much, since my daughter is a common example of a homeschool graduate! Parents who think they can't provide an adequate education for their teenagers should think again. Particularly in recent years, homeschools have been turning out intelligent, hard-working young adults while traditional education methods have often struggled just to keep up.

Focus on the Family recently celebrated 25 years of ministry. In that quarter-century, the homeschool movement has grown from a relatively small group of dedicated advocates to a well-organized, nationwide network of more than 2 million parent-educators and students. As Focus grew, so did homeschooling. And both have remained steadfast in their commitment and dedication to family.

Focus on the Family recognizes that parents have several viable options when choosing how to educate their children, and we have worked to create advice and articles addressing each alternative. With that in mind, Focus on the Family has plenty to offer homeschool families. For example, Family.org-Focus' main website-provides a host of articles, features, news, and broadcasts pertaining to the needs of homeshoolers.

Here are some Focus Web areas of specific use to your homeschooling efforts:

    · Parents' Place addresses the needs of the most important person in your child's life: you, the parent. "Schoolchildren," a specific area of the site, regularly runs articles on homeschooling.

    · Parenting Encouragement e-Newsletter: Parents—especially homeschool parents—need plenty of encouragement. This e-newsletter arrives in your e-mailbox every week, directing you to specific areas on our Web sites where you can find the encouragement you need.

    · Homeschooling Hot Topics Collection: A "best of" collection from family.org that answers some of the most frequently asked questions about homeschooling and other educational topics.

    · Focus on Education: Homeschoolers are often politically savvy, and this web page is for those with an interest in education policy. You can school yourself in the issues of education by visiting.

If the Internet isn't for you, Focus on the Family has plenty of print content available. We'd be glad to deliver Focus on the Family magazine, our complimentary flagship publication, to your mailbox each month. For families with young children, Focus recently created a special "Growing Years" insert to the magazine that includes helpful tips geared toward those raising preschool and school-age children.

For 25 years, Focus President Dr. James Dobson has been encouraging families to "turn their hearts toward home." And whether or not you are a homeschool family, Focus on the Family and its staff of 1300 employees are here for you.
